Beyond Self-Help
The law of the LORD is perfect,
refreshing the soul.
Psalm 19:8

Numerous ancient and modern books offer much advice on how to find fulfillment, succeed in business, have many friends, happiness and other such topics. This literary genre is known as self-help. I believe the Bible is the greatest self-help book ever written. It is inspired by the divine author of human life, our Creator, who knows what is best for our lasting fulfillment. Without God’s love, grace and mercy, we are helpless, yet we excel in self-help only because we profess our faith in God and do good deeds for others. That is the law of the Lord, which refers to God’s teachings and directions for life. The psalmist says that God’s law is perfect and also gives our soul refreshment—a peaceful feeling with courage and strength. Many ideologies may promise the good life, but those worldly beliefs cannot compete with the law of the God, for “the law of the Lord is perfect.“
